Industry Needs Fuel Effeciency
In April, a motorcade of trucks circled the U.S. Capitol with signs saying, "When Trucks Stop, America Stops." This is part of a recent movement to drive in that commercial traffic is the heartbeat of America, and no other industry is being affected a badly by the rising fuel costs.
As costs increase for the trucking industry, costs for the nation increase as well. The additional cost in fuel increases the price for healthcare, food, manufacturing, waste removal, retail, and other services.
Burdening the industry with additional taxes for carbon emissions is not the answer. Technological advances can mitigate a fuel crisis more efficiently than tax increases. Therefore, Congress should prioritize the introduction of technology to reduce consumption and lower fuel costs.
Thankfully the needed technology already exists. The industry just needs research to adapt to the technology to it. Hybrid cars, already becoming popular in the market, combine gas and electric motors for more efficient engines. Because trucks consume more fuel than cars, hybrid technology can be much more effective in them.
For instance, tractor trailer hybrids will see a reduced consumption of 10 percent. While is might not sound like a lot, 1 hybrid tractor trailer can save as much on fuel as 250 hybrid cars. Utility trucks and waste removal vehicles would also see around a 60-100% increase in fuel efficiency.
Not to mention these benefits to the fuel savings of the trucking industry would benefit other goods and services, making them more affordable for the American people. It also gives American an additional service/good to export since the rest of the world is also feeling the fuel pinch.
